What you still need to check
- Outstanding finance, theft and write-off status. Run a vehicle history check (often called an HPI-style check) before paying. A car with finance owing can be repossessed from you.
- V5C logbook. Ask to see the original V5C. The name and address on it should match the seller and the place you are buying from, and the VIN on the V5C should match the car.
- Mileage consistency. Compare the odometer with the MOT history and service records. A reading lower than an earlier MOT is a warning sign.
- Test drive and inspection. Drive the car from cold on varied roads. Check that it comes with two keys and no warning lights, and consider an independent inspection.
- Written receipt. Get a dated receipt with the price, registration, VIN, mileage, and the names and addresses of both parties. Avoid cash where you can.
